Lasting Powers of Attorney

Published 21 September 2021

With September being Alzheimer’s Month, it is a good time to consider making Lasting Powers of Attorney.

A Lasting Power of Attorney is a document in which you appoint one or more people (your attorneys) to make decisions on your behalf.  There are 2 different types of Lasting Power of Attorney; one for your property and financial affairs and one for health and welfare.  They can be especially useful if you lose capacity to make decisions for yourself in the future.

Even those who have had an early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease may still be able to set up Lasting Powers of Attorney, so it is worth considering putting them in place, even if you have already had a diagnosis.

For those people who do not have Lasting Powers of Attorney in place, and have already lost capacity, an application can be made to the Court for a Deputy to be appointed to assist with their property and affairs.

If you would like assistance with setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney or with a Deputyship application then please contact Sarah Heal on 01228 514077 or at sarah.heal@cartmells.co.uk.
